What is an ANSI grade lock

A functional, qualitative lock is one of the best ways to secure your house or office from intruders. There are so many different types of locks out on the market, so choosing one might be quite complicated. So, what to consider before purchasing a lock?

First of all, decide whether you want a traditional mechanical lock or a newer digital one.

Another important factor to consider is the ANSI rating. You’re probably wondering what it is. American National Standards Institute runs a bunch of tests to define whether the lock meets its standards. This rating has three categories that define how strong and durable the locks are. Sure Lock & Key is a company with years of experience in the locksmith industry. We have worked with various locks, so we know everything about ANSI grading. Today, we would like to share our knowledge with you.

ANSI lock Grade 1

We’ve already mentioned that there are three categories of locks according to the ANSI grading. First of all, let’s talk about a lock with ANSI Grade 1 certification.
Lock Grade 1 is the highest ANSI rating a lock can receive. To receive this rating, a lock has to undergo a bunch of tests. It has to resist at least 800,000 cycles when the door gets opened and closed. Also, it has to withstand at least 6 door strikes. To define the strength of the lock, the manufacturer has to run a weight test. The knob has to withstand 360 pounds of weight.

This type of lock is mostly used for commercial purposes. However, they can be used for residential buildings as well. Grade 1 locks will provide your house with the highest level of security and will give you peace of mind. They are extremely durable as well, so you won’t have to change them often. However, keep in mind that Grade 1 locks are quite expensive.

ANSI lock Grade 2

The second type we’ll discuss today is Lock Grade 2. This type of lock is widely used for residential buildings. They can be used for industrial buildings as well, but they might not provide them with decent security.
These locks are put through similar tests to the Grade 1 ones. However, they have to withstand only 400,000 cycles. The weight test requires only 250 pounds. Also, they’ll have to resist 4-5 door strikes.
Locks with ANSI Grade 2 rating are not as durable as Grade 1 ones, so they’re better for your home rather than an office, as not so many people enter it.
So, if you’re looking for the best lock for your front door, ANSI Grade 2 lock might be an excellent option. On the other hand, if you want to use this type of lock for a commercial building, it’s better to use it for the interior doors rather than the exterior ones.

ANSI lock Grade 3

The lowest ANSI rating that a lock can receive is Grade 3. Lock Grade 3 can withstand only about 200,000 cycles, so they won’t be as durable as the previous two types. Also, it can handle about 2 door strikes and 150 pounds in the weight test.
Grade 3 locks are the least expensive ones, but they’re the least secure as well. They cannot be used for any commercial buildings. Without additional measures, like anti-picking and anti-locking pins, they, unfortunately, won’t work to protect your home either. These locks are widely used for interior doors to provide more privacy. So, if your front door is equipped with a Grade 3 lock, we recommend you use professional residential locksmith services and replace it.
