How often should you lubricate locks
Door locks are an integral part of any security system and perhaps the most important device in your home or office. After all, yes, we use them several times every day, and door locks are the first means of protection against thieves or other outsiders. Because of frequent daily use, it is very important to properly and regularly take care of your door locks so that they can work for as long as possible. However, if we don't take care of our locks, breakages and failures are more likely to happen. While lock problems usually require professional locksmith intervention, cleaning and lubricating require almost zero knowledge of locksmithing and may be enough to get them working properly for as long as possible. For example, if your locks often jam or are quite difficult to open, then the problem may be precisely in insufficient care and the need for lubrication. Lubricating your door locks don't require a lot of tools and effort. However, if you want to spend less time on this, then you can always count on the services of a professional locksmith company. We provide all types of residential locksmith services, including door lock maintenance. However, if you’re still determined to oil the locks yourself, then below we have listed some useful tips.
Lubricate Your Locks Regularly
How to lubricate a door lock
- Disassemble the lock into parts. To do this, unscrew the screws that attach the lock to the door, the screws under the door handle and those that hold the front panel. Then pull out the door handle and front panel.
- Clean the parts from dirt. To do this, use a cleaning agent, thoroughly clean all parts and then wipe them dry.
- Apply lubricant. Before applying, please, check whether all parts of the lock are dry and clean. After that, apply lubricant to all parts of the lock and into the lock slot itself.
- Assemble and install the lock. To do this, place the latch and faceplate, and install the outer handle first, then the handle from the inside. Put on the faceplate and install all the screws. After that, check the door handle and lock are working properly.
