North Branford was incorporated as a town from neighboring Branford in 1831.
The previous year, local resident Maltby Fowler opened a button-making shop in the town. It’s subsequent success - along with the inventiveness of his six sons, who devised a range of machines to produce screws, embossed silk, pins, and horseshoe nails - saw the rise of new competing manufacturers along the town’s Farm River, significantly boosting the economic productivity of the small town.
In addition, the abundant supply of trap rock also made quarrying a significant contributory growth industry for the town.
