About Hamden
Originally settled by Puritan colonists as part of the larger settlement of New Haven until 1786 when it broke away and became a separate town, named after the English statesman and parliamentarian, John Hampden, who rose to prominence in challenging the authoritarianism of King Charles I, and whose attempted arrest in the House of Commons by the latter was one of the key events that led to the bloody Civil War across the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland between 1642 and 1651.
The town of Hamden was ranked #53 in the Money List of ‘America's best small cities’ by CNN in 2012. In 2008, both Fortune Magazine and CNN picked Hamden as #33 on their ‘Best Place to Live and Launch’ list, citing Hamden's great blend of urban and suburban lifestyles.
