About Galveston
Galveston is widely known as a coastal resort city and port of Southeast Texas. The city was founded in 1836 and served as the capital of the Republic of Texas. Galveston was one of the main ports, and the city’s economy depended on trading, especially cotton exports. By the end of the 19th century, Galveston became one of the biggest cities in the state and its largest commerce center. In 1900 a devastating hurricane almost totally ruined the city and its economic development. After that, the city emerged as one of the main tourist attractions. Due to its convenient location in the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston attracts many visitors yearly.
