About Sugar Land
First settlers started to arrive in the area of what was to become Sugar Land in the 1820s. For the first few decades, corn and cotton were the main exports. Gradually some farmers started to grow enough cane and became able to sell raw sugar locally. Being located in the fertile floodplain of the Brazos River, Sugar Land became home to the Imperial Sugar Company. Eventually, the area got its name after its leading commercial product. Sugar.
Being one of the fastest-growing cities in Fort Bend County, Sugar Land is also one of the safest places to live in the state. Sport plays an important role in the city’s life. Sugar Land won the award of being “The Fittest City in Texas” 3 times. Also, the city is the home to the Sugar Land Skeeters, the Minor League baseball team and the Sugar Land Youth Cricket Club.
