About Shelton
The good town of Shelton was settled by English colonists in 1639 as part of the neighboring town of Stratford. In 1662, three Stratford selectmen secured all written deeds of transfer from the Golden Hills Paugussett indian tribe for a vast swathe of land that comprises the present-day towns of Trumbull, Shelton, and Monroe.
Shelton split from Stratford in 1789 as Huntington, named after Samuel Huntington who was one of the co-signatories of both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.
It was incorporated as a city in 1915, and consolidated with the neighboring town of Huntington to become the current city of Shelton as it currently exists.
The town motto for Shelton is “Vision to See, Faith to Believe, Courage to Do”.
