About Newtown
The land that would later become the community of Newtown was purchased in 1705 by English settlers from the native indian Pohtatuck tribe, who had originally called Quanneapague. It was settled and formally incorporated as a town in 1711.
The residents maintained strong business, cultural, and economic ties to the former mother country of England; so much so that it remained a stronghold of pro-British Tory royalist sentiment even in the early stages of the Revolutionary War. In 1781, French General Rochambeaueu and his troops encamped in Newtown on their now-legendary march to Yorktown; the decisive battle of which led to the defeat and surrender of Great Britain in that war, and ultimately to the independence of the Colonies and subsequent establishment of the United States of America.
Undoubtedly, the darkest day not just in Newtown’s history but also one of the darkest days of recent U.S. history occurred in the town on December 14th, 2012, when an aggrieved gunman opened fire in a local school, killing 20 children and 6 members of staff before fatally turning his firearm on himself.
On an altogether brighter note, the perennially-popular board game of Scrabble was partially developed in Newtown by James Brunot, who purchased the U.S. rights to the game.
