About Milford
The area that today is the welcoming and thriving town of Milford was purchased on February 1st, 1639, by English settlers from Ansantawae, chief of the local Paugassett native tribe, who called the land, ‘Wepawaug’, the name of the river running through that area and which has given its name to streets in both Milford and neighboring Orange. Interestingly, it was on the Boston Post Road in Milford that local company SCELBI Computer Consulting became the world’s very first personal computer manufacturer. The fact that such a small company in Milford was the first to create something that has now become such a prominent and indispensable part of people’s life — namely their personal computer — is no doubt an encapsulation of the pioneering and enterprising spirit that is at the heart of America from the earliest settler days.
