The area that today is the welcoming and thriving town of Milford was purchased on February 1st, 1639, by English settlers from Ansantawae, chief of the local Paugassett native tribe, who called the land, ‘Wepawaug’, the name of the river running through that area and which has given its name to streets in both Milford and neighboring Orange.
