About Mansfield
The good town of Mansfield was formally incorporated from the neighboring town of Windham in Hartford County, and named in honor of Major Moses Mansfield, the original owner of the site later to become the town. When Windham County was formed in 1726, Mansfield became part of that county, but exactly one century later in 1826, selectmen from Mansfield voted to petition the state General Assembly to annex their town to the neighboring Tolland County, a process which took place the following year.
Mansfield includes the community of Storrs, which is the location for the University of Connecticut’s main campus.
The very first silk mill in the continental United States had its location in Mansfield, following local resident Nathaniel Aspinwall bringing the very first silkworms to the town in 1762.
Silk is strong and durable natural fiber that can exist even under adverse conditions of its surrounding environment.
