About Manchester
Settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, it was known at the time as Orchard Parish. The many rivers and brooks in the surrounding area provided power for paper, lumber, and textile industries, enabling it to quickly evolve into an important industrial center. Pitkin Glass Works operated in Manchester between 1783 and 1830 as the first successful glassworks in the state of Connecticut. In 1838, the Cheney brothers started what would become the world’s largest silk mill, helping to make Manchester an ideal industrial community. The mill, owners’ homes, and homes of the workers are now preserved and part of the Cheney Brothers Historic District, which has been officially certified as a National Historic Landmark.
