About Ansonia
Founded in 1652, and despite a relatively consistent small population base, Ansonia has more than hit above its weight in the field of industrial manufacturing and engineering, relative to its overall demographic size.
The town was originally farmed by early settlers, using the river for saw and grist mills.
By the end of the 19th century, the town was a pivotal center for the production in the heavy machine industry; manufacturing brass, copper, rubber, plastics, and molding/tubing, iron castings, sheet metal, electric, automatic screw machines, textiles, and foundry products, earning it the nickname ‘the copper city’ and becoming a bedrock of industrial engineering and manufacturing in the state of Connecticut.
The famous Ansonia Clock Company was formed in the town in 1851, and which lays claim to the invention of the figurine clock.
It was also in Ansonia that native Frenchman, Pierre Lallement, submitted a patent application for the world’s very first pedal bicycle.
