Learning how to install a smart lock on a door is usually straightforward when you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take your time with alignment. Since you’re installing a security device, careful setup matters more than speed. This step-by-step approach helps avoid common issues like binding, uneven mounting, or unnecessary battery drain.
Step 1: Remove the Old Deadbolt
Start on the inside of the door. Unscrew the interior faceplate and remove the thumbturn. Once those parts are off, slide the old latch bolt out of the edge of the door.
Step 2: Install the New Latch
Insert the new latch into the edge bore, making sure the “UP” marking faces upward. If your old setup used a round drive-in latch and the new latch has a rectangular faceplate, remove the faceplate so the latch sits flush in the hole.
Step 3: Mount the Exterior Keypad or Touchscreen
From the outside, feed the power cable through the door under the latch (or as directed by the manufacturer). Hold the keypad flat against the door so it stays aligned while you work from the inside.
Step 4: Attach the Interior Mounting Plate
On the interior side, route the cable through the mounting plate and secure it using the provided long screws. Tighten the screws until the plate is snug, but avoid overtightening, which can cause the lock to bind or sit unevenly.

Step 5: Connect the Interior Assembly
Plug the cable into the interior unit and gently tuck any excess wire into the housing. Make sure no wires are pinched before placing the unit against the mounting plate.
Step 6: Secure the Lock and Add Batteries
Fasten the interior assembly to the mounting plate. Insert the batteries only after the lock is fully mounted, then test the deadbolt by hand to confirm it moves smoothly before completing app setup.
