About Pasadena
Before European settlement, the area in what is now Pasadena was inhabited by natives from the Karankawa and Atakapan tribes. Following independence from Spain, Mexican authorities moved to colonize northern Texas by offering land grants to United States citizens. This led to a large influx of settlers into the area.
The final and decisive battle of the Texan Revolution, the Battle of San Jacinta, took place near modern-day Pasadena on April 21, 1836.
Because this was essentially the battle that won Texas her independence, it has led to Pasadena being dubbed “the birthplace of Texas”. Pasadena was incorporated as a township in 1895.
In 1901, the Texas Oil Boom began with the discovery of a vast oil well at Spindletop near Pasadena. This led to multiple oil refineries being established in the area and to the town’s economy being closely linked to the petroleum industry.
In 1963, the NASA Johnson Space Center was established near Pasadena and subsequently named in honor of former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson - a native of the Lone Star State - by Act of Congress in 1973.
