How to Remove a Lock from a Door Knob: Quick DIY Guide

If you want to remove a lock from a doorknob, here’s a simple way. If you’re working with a door knob with a lock that uses a key, you can often take out just the lock cylinder without needing to remove the entire door knob assembly from the door. It’s an easy task you can handle yourself with a few simple steps.

Step 1: Insert the Correct Key

Insert the key that operates the specific door knob lock you’re working on, pushing it fully into the keyhole.

Step 2: Turn the Key to the “Service” Position

Gently turn the key. On most brands, you’ll turn it about 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn, usually in the direction you would turn it to unlock the door. The goal is to align the internal pins to release the cylinder. Hold it precisely in this spot.

Step 3: Locate the Release Mechanism
