Naugatuck

Settled in 1701 as a farming community in rural western Connecticut. As the Industrial Revolution commenced, Naugatuck was transformed into a hardscrabble mill town like neighboring towns in the Naugatuck Valley. Rubber became its chief manufacturing product, with Charles Goodyear working at his brother’s rubber company until it was consolidated as the United States Rubber Company. Founded in Naugatuck in 1892, it was a consolidation of nine rubber companies and maintained its corporate headquarters in the town until the 1980’s. The company’s Footwear Division manufactured the Keds Sneakers from 1917 until the 1980’s. It also used to produce Naugahyde leather products but they are no longer produced there either. Rubber was a revolutionary product that was good for countless uses; providing a durable natural material that has a large stretch ratio, high resilience, and is extremely waterproof. We can barely imagine a world where rubber products simply don’t exist, as they have become such an integral part of our daily existence, to the point of us not even noticing them anymore unless something goes wrong.
