About Greenwich
Settled in 1640. One of the founders was Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, daughter-in-law of Massachusetts Bay Colony founder and Governor John Winthrop. What is now called Greenwich Point in the town was known through much of its early history as ‘Elizabeth’s Neck’.
It was formally declared a township by the Connecticut General Assembly on May 11, 1665.
During the Revolutionary War, General Israel Putnam made a daring escape from British custody by sliding down a steep slope in Greenwich, which has since become a famous story in the annals of the American fight for independence.
Greenwich is the wealthiest town in the state of Connecticut, with an average net income of $679, 000 per year and a median price for a single-family home of $1.7 million.
