About New Britain
Founded in 1687, incorporated as a parish in 1754, chartered as a township in 1850, and formally incorporated as a city in 1871, New Britain is a thriving and prospering city with both a rich history and a bright future.
It was known as the ‘Hardware Capital of the World’ from the late 19th century onward because of the concentration of hardware and tool manufacturers operating there.
Interestingly, it has also been the site of several firsts; the wire coat hanger was invented in New Britain during 1869 by local resident O.A. North, meanwhile it was at the New Britain chapter of the YMCA that both the basketball technique of dribbling (1895) and the sport of racquetball were invented (1954).
Such is the concentration of people of Polish descent and ethnicity in New Britain — even so far as to have a distinctive local dialect — that it has been affectionately dubbed ‘New Britski’ by some witty wags!
