About Cranston
Much of the land to later become the fine city of Cranston was purchased in 1638 by Roger Williams from the native Narragansett Indians.
The town itself was created by the State General Assembly in 1754, although there is disagreement among historians where the actual name of Cranston came from, and whether it was named after Samuel Cranston, the former Governor, or his grandson, Thomas Cranston, who was Speaker of the state House of Representatives at the time of the town’s ratification.
Cranston was formally incorporated as a city on March 10, 1910.
Cranston was named one of the ‘100 Best Places to Live’ in the United States by Money magazine in 2006. It is among the top 25 safest cities in the country, according to CQ Press's research. According to the survey done by 24/7 Wall St website, Cranston ranked 36th on the list of ‘America’s 50 Best Cities to Live’.
