About Richmond, IL
Richmond is a village in McHenry County, Illinois. The population is about 2000 people. The first settler of the village was William A. McConnell, a carpenter. McConnell built a wooden house in 1837. The village name is in honor of Richmond, Vermont, the home of the first settler. Together with Dr. R. R. Stone, McConnell established a cheese factory and creamery in the village.
In 1902, a major fire in Richmond engulfed most of the commercial district, where all the major businesses were concentrated. After the fire, many businesses needed to rebuild their buildings. It became a major obstacle to further economic growth as many entrepreneurs didn't rebuild their businesses. A few years later, Richmond started to grow back and continued to do so into the pleasant community it is today.
