Additionally, vehicle security threats like relay attacks occur when car thieves use high-gain transponders to amplify the low-frequency (LF) handshake signal from your car to the active fob inside your home. Storing your keys in a Faraday pouch—or even a metal biscuit tin—creates a simple shield that blocks these signals and keeps your vehicle secure. Passive Apartment Fobs
Unlike active car keys, a residential key fob for house or apartment entry uses passive RFID technology (operating at 125 kHz or 13.56 MHz). They do not contain a battery. Instead, they rely entirely on the electromagnetic field of the wall reader to power up.
If your apartment fob suddenly stops working, demagnetization is rarely the cause. Instead, dropping or bending the plastic credential can create micro-fractures in the delicate internal copper loop antenna, breaking the circuit. Alternatively, the building manager’s administrative dashboard may have deactivated the keycard due to software updates or database sync errors.
