About Westport
The first white settlers to the area that became Westport reported seeing Pequot Indians in the area, which the natives called Machamux, meaning ‘beautiful land’. Settlers arrived in 1653 having followed cattle there to the isolated land. As the settlement expanded, its name changed; briefly called Bankside, it was officially named Green’s Farm in 1732, and formally incorporated as the town of Westport in 1835. During the Revolutionary War, a platoon of Minutemen from Westport successfully launched a surprise offensive on a 1,850-strong British army contingent on April 25, 1777, crouching while they passed then launching a devastating attack on the Crown forces from the rear.
The home of the fictional Stevens family on the 1960’s sitcom Bewitched was in Westport, but the show was filmed in Hollywood, California; whilst the first season episode of The Twilight Zone titled ‘A Stop at Willoughby’ was set but again not filmed in Westport, which was where the iconic show’s creator and executive producer Rod Serling lived.
