About Westbrook
Westbrook is a coastal town in Middlesex County, located on the Connecticut side of the Long Island Sound. Originally a part of Saybrook Colony, Westbrook became an incorporated town in 1840. Shipbuilding shortly became the main branch of the local industry thanks to the town’s location and timber from a rare local wood species. However, the town’s shipbuilding history is mainly associated with the Turtle, the first submarine ever used in battle. It was built in 1775 by the inventor and war engineer David Bushnell, a Westbrook-native and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Westbrook has remained a popular resort area from the end of the 19th century till today.
