The area comprising Trumbull today was occupied by Paugusett native tribes for thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers, who established the town of Stratford in 1639.
In 1725, Stratford residents living in the northern part of town petitioned the Colony of Connecticut to establish their own separate village, which was formally granted. Initially they planned to call the new village Nickel’s Farm after the family who lived in it’s center at the time, but the Connecticut Colony instead named it Unity. The village merged with the neighboring Long Hill to form North Stratford in 1744.
By the late 1780’s, North Stratford began to petition the Connecticut General Assembly seeking independence from Stratford. It was granted in October 1797 and named after Jonathan Trumbull; a merchant, Patriot, and statesman who served as Connecticut Governor during the Revolutionary War.
In 2011, Family Circle magazine named Trumbull as 7th in their ‘Top 10 best towns to live’ list.
