About Thomaston
The town of Thomaston was first settled by Henry Cook in 1728 and was originally part of the neighboring town of Plymouth, where it was referred to as Plymouth Hollow.
It is known primarily for its clock-making, which started in 1803 when local resident Eli Terry established a factory in the town, which brought mass production to clock manufacturing, and even invented the shelf clock, patented by Terry in 1814 and which single-handedly made clocks cheaper, driving the average price down from $25 to $5 and selling widely throughout the U.S.
The town was formally incorporated in 1875 and given its current name, given in honor of Seth Thomas, a clockmaker who established a factory there in 1812, and who stamped each of his clocks with ‘Thomas Town’, leading to the town’s name being derived from that. Thomas would also go on to design the Grand Central Clock in New York City’s Grand Central Station.
Somewhat fittingly, the town’s motto is “A Town For All Time”.
