About Derby
The area later to become the town of Derby was settled as an Indian trading post in 1642, although a native American presence had been there already for centuries previously. The very first year-round house was built in 1651 and the town itself being named Derby in 1675 and being formally incorporated as a town in 1775.
Charlton Comics was situated in Derby between its founding in 1944 and closure in 1986, with many of the characters associated with that publishing house going on to directly influence the groundbreaking and landmark graphic novel of Watchmen, also published in 1986, and which subsequently revolutionized the entire comic-book industry.
Derby also lays claim to pioneering both the first electric trolley system and the very first commercial electric locomotive train in the continental United States, the latter of which is still kept in full working order today by the Shore Line Trolley Museum.
